Top Trench Coats on a Budget
Updated: Oct 26, 2023
In search of: a trench coat that is reasonably priced but will last more than one season
When I was in uni, I was always so jealous of the stylish corporate gals I saw walking to work with their cute boots, slacks, and trench coats. I wished that I could be nearly as put together as them when I started working full time.
Of course, now that I actually am full time and I'm weary and jaded, I know better. But at least now I can look classy in a trench without it being too extra!
When I was hunting for my perfect trench, I found it almost impossible to find something that was made out of natural materials, would fit well, but wouldn't break the bank. So 1 year after my initial search, I've scoured the internet again to bring you the best trench coats on a budget that won't have you eating 2 minute noodles until the next pay day.
1. Emerson Trench Coat from All About Eve
If I had to buy another trench, this would probably be my 'just right' pick. It's:
100% cotton (but unlined)
A great length (121cm), not that awkward midi length that hits just below the knee
Delicious neutral beige - not too warm or too cold
2. Classic Longline Trench Coat from Glassons
Say what you want about Glassons, but there's a reason why we all flock there time and time again - they just know how to do the basics.
Why this is a great, budget friendly alternative:
Although it is 100% polyester, it's lined
Proper longline
Great belt and button details
3. Active Premium Woven Trench from Cotton On Body
Even better for our wallets, this Cotton On Body Trench delivers athleisure stunningly. I love the navy colour and you can't tell me that this wouldn't complete a pre- and post-Pilates look. It is:
100% polyamide and lining is 100% polyester, but that means it is water repellent
Classic longline (can you sense a trend here?)
Slouchy and oversized
4. Oversized Buttoned Trench Coat from Zara
Zara is definitely not the cheapest brand out there, however I think this coat's features justify the price.
Cotton blend fabric (they don't specify exact composition online)
Fantastic details - the buttons going down the back are so unique!
Purposefully oversized with no belt, which also adds flavour (I can see myself DIY belting this for those snatched days)
5. Halsey Trench Coat from Lover
This coat is also a bit pricier, however I think it is a steal when on sale (like now).
100% organic cotton main and 100% polyester lining
Oversized fit and longline - 122cm, great for my 5'7 girlies
The stone colour is perfect for the cool-toned girls
6. Premium Buckle Trim Midi Trench Coat from Nasty Gal
Honestly I tend to forget about Nasty Gal but this search brought me back and I'm so glad it did. Look at the buckles! The buttons! And at a fairly reasonable price. It is/has:
100% cotton main and 100% polyester lining
Statement buttons on the back
A unique charcoal - if you already have a classic trench, a darker colour is great to consider
7. Harper Trench Coat from TWIICE
The last gem that I found is also via the Iconic. This is not sale price so I was really impressed by its features:
100% cotton (but unlined)
A true longline and get this - it goes up by 5cm every size, starting at 123cm for an AU Size 8. Unheard of!
Such interesting front/shoulder flaps, I feel like these add so much dimension
The only potential downside is you can only close it with the belt, there are no buttons or closures.
Disclaimer (as per): I may have a slight bias when it comes to trench coats - neutral colours and longlines have my heart. I've steered towards longline as I find that shorter, thigh length coats don't sit amazingly on me but I am so jealous of those that can pull them off!
Most of these are still a little pricy, so 2 more tips that I never seem to practice myself are:
Shop mid or end of season sales - prices can come down by up to 50% depending on brand
Look for your favourite coat style/model at different stockists, as their sale prices can also vary
I hope one of these trench coats has inspired you or given you some ideas on what to look for. Happy hunting!
